No matter how loyal or brave or hardworking they were, soldiers and other common people in Rome often had to endure poverty and even slavery. Even the common men who became wealthy did not have a voice in government. How could the common people make life better for themselves and their families? How could they make the republic they loved a better place for all citizens? Give me a green check mark when you’re READY Plebeians – Common people of Rome Patricians – Aristocracy of Rome Twelve Tables – Written Laws of Rome Consuls – Two Men who were asked to enforce the laws of Rome. Elected every year. Unit 9, lesson 3 READING GUIDE QUESTION #1 Common people (Plebeians) did NOT have as many rights as patricians did. They weren’t allowed to marry patricians (Aristocracy). When the plebeians found themselves in debt they became slaves to the lender while they worked to pay off the debt. Common people also had to serve as unpaid soldiers when necessary. How did they respond to these problems? Common people refused to fight in the army and threatened to build their own city. They banded together, called themselves plebeians, and demanded more political power. What did the plebeians accomplish by changing the laws? The plebeians insisted that the laws of Rome be written down In 450 B.C., the laws were published as the Twelve Tables. Plebeians gained the right to marry patricians. A Roman citizen could no longer be put into chains just because he owed money. Who were the CONSULS? The consuls executed the laws. There were two and one of the consuls had to be a plebeian. The consuls were elected to serve one-year terms, and either consul could forbid the actions of the other so that no single man would hold too much power. REVIEW! TRUE OR FALSE: 1. 2.
