DAFF CLIMATE CHANGE CONFERENCE 11 – 12 August 2011 DIRECTORATE: CLIMATE CHANGE & DISASTER MANAGEMENT BRANCH : FORESTRY & NATURAL RESOURCES Break-away groups Context Globally, agriculture is expected to undergo significant transformation if it is to meet the challenges of food security and responding to climate change. Climate smart agriculture is regarded as an approach that could be used to address both food security and climate change concerns. Definition FAO defines climate smart agriculture as agriculture that sustainably increases productivity, resilience (adaptation), reduces/removes GHGs (mitigation), and enhances achievement of national food security and development goals. Scope of Climate Smart Agriculture agriculture (e.g. conservation agriculture), forestry (e.g. Agro-forestry) and fisheries (e.g. aquaculture) 2 Break-away groups Characteristics • More holistic than just one agenda item • Recognizes multiple goals • It will have different meaning at different geographical scales – owing to different realities • Integration is key: communities, different government ministries, etc 3 Break-away groups How can we enhance the already existing synergies between food security, adaptation and mitigation in agriculture, forestry and fisheries sector? What are the key technical, institutional, policy and financial responses that are required to achieve this transformation? How can we improve the consistency between agriculture, food security and climate change policy making at national and provincial level? How do we empower different agricultural systems / practices to effectively contribute to climate smart agriculture? How can other ministries and relevant stakeholders support climate smart agriculture? What would happen in the absence of climate smart agriculture?
