March 27th
Scientist’s Walk on the Wildside: Campers take a tour out in the IGFA wetlands observing the different
plants and animals while collecting water samples. Once the water samples are collected the campers
will perform water quality tests measuring the pH, nitrate levels, phosphate levels, salinity, and the
amount of dissolved oxygen found in each water sample.
Sea Lion Challenge: Campers will pretend to be sea lions and run through a fun obstacle course with
teammates. Campers will learn about the various challenges sea lions have to overcome in order to
survive. Such as predation, pollution, short food supply, etc. The first team to complete the obstacles
and collect the required amount of food to survive wins.
Whale Study: Campers will learn about the different types of marine mammals found worldwide. They
will experience how blubber is used to keep animals warm, how echolocation helps toothed whales to
hunt for food, how baleen whales feed on tiny prey and get an up close look at various replica marine
mammal skeletons. Sea otter skulls, a polar bear’s claw, and even a walrus’ tusk are a few of the replica
skeletons the campers will get to see.
Creatures of the Deep: Campers will identify the five layers of the ocean, from the Sunlight zone (0-600
feet) all the way down to the abyss and the deep trenches (36,000 feet below the surface). They will see
examples of creatures and fish which can survive in the harsh depths of the ocean. Campers will then
create their own creature using craft supplies and have to explain how their creature can survive the
cold dark depths of the ocean.
Marine Bingo: Campers will learn about the different types of marine animals (seals, sea lions, dolphins,
whales, turtles, etc.) found throughout the world in our IGFA bingo game.
