The great Aztec Empire
Mi País, USA!
Summer kicks off here at Camp Papaqui in
Tenochtitlan, the capital ofthe great Aztec
Empire. Our campers will go back in time to
become a part of this ancient Mexican civilization.
The Aztec were an agricultural people, so campers
will learn to grow squash, corn, avocados,
and chili peppers just like they did. We’ll even
use these ingredients to make delicious Aztec
tortillas and tamales! We’ll have fun making
their intricate metal jewelry and sculptures of
characters from Aztec mythology. Campers
will even get to play Aztec games – one is a lot
like basketball and soccer put together! For two
weeks campers will become part of an amazing
people who built pyramids and a vast, culturally
rich empire, and who continue to be a part of
Mexican culture today – the Aztec!
Happy Fourth of July! During Independence Day
week here at Camp Papaqui, we’ll be taking a
break from our travels across Latin America to
come back to the United States to learn about our
own culture! We’ll have an old-fashioned Fourth
of July picnic complete with hot dogs and
watermelon and some of our favorite summer
games. Campers will take a look into American
history to learn about some of the first people
who helped make our country free.
The mysterious Mayans
of the Yucatan
From June 20th through July 1st, Camp Papaqui
will transform into the jungles of the Yucatan
peninsula, where the mysterious Mayan culture
lived. Campers will learn the secrets of the
Mayan calendar, and how they used the
movements of the sun, moon, planets, and
stars to calculate the days of the year.
We’ll also learn Mayan Math – the first number
system in the world to use a very important
number – zero! The Mayans wrote poems and
stories in their own unique hieroglyphics that
campers will decipher and use too. We will
uncover their hidden ruins, sculpt and paint their
works of art, and become a part of the mysterious
Mayan world!
Fishing the Caribbean Islands
with the Taíno people
On July 11th, we’ll be off to the Caribbean
Islands for two weeks with the Taíno people.
From their island classrooms, campers will find
themselves among a fishing tribe who spent their
time polishing stones, making pottery, and carving
wood – and we’ll get to do all of those things
too! (Well, maybe with a few kid-friendly
modifications). Not only will campers learn about
the people, but they’ll explore what’s above and
below the crystal blue Caribbean Sea surrounding
where the Taíno lived. We’ll learn about
hurricanes – did you know that the word
“hurricane” comes from the Taíno language?
We’ll even dive underwater to explore the beautiful
coral reefs and all of their amazing sea life. And
finally, what trip to the Caribbean is complete
without a summer beach party? At Camp Papaqui,
it’ll be fun in the island sun!
Shhh. All around Camp Papaqui, jungle tribes
are hiding in the wilds of the Amazon Rainforest.
From July 25th through August 6th, campers will
become part of one of several secret tribes
doing their best to stay hidden in their rainforest
home. We’ll discover the animals that live with
us: jaguars, giant anteaters, anacondas, howler
monkeys, and many, many more. Campers will
learn how to create secret codes and follow maps
through the jungle. Of course, we’ll play secret
jungle games that tribes will help create and then
share with the rest of the rainforest. The Amazon
Rainforest is a very special place, and campers at
Camp Papaqui will learn why it’s important to
help protect its trees, its animals, and its people.
The lost city of Machu Picchu
Our journey across Latin America will finish high
in the Andes Mountains with the Inca. From August
8th-19th, Camp Papaqui can be found up in the
lost city of Machu Picchu. We’ll experience life
in the Incan Empire through music and dance
– campers will make and play their very own
Andean panpipes, called zampoñas, and dance
the Marinera of Peru. As honorary Children of
the Sun, campers will learn the legends of Inti the
sun god and Mayta Capac, the Incan Hercules.
Campers will learn about traveling around on
Incan roads, and our older campers will learn
to build their own Incan bridges! We’ll even
get a visit from some of our favorite Andean
creatures, llamas!
