Digestibility trial with Mink (Neovison vison) Hydrolysed Feather protein (1212F) Report on the digestibility of hydrolysed feather protein. The trial was ordered and paid by Sonac BV, P.O. Box 47, 5690 AA Son, The Netherlands. The purpose of the trial was to measure the apparent mink digestibility of crude protein (CP) and amino acids in hydrolysed feather protein. Material and method The sample of hydrolysed feather protein (standard) was received on 7 February 2012 from Sonac Son. The trial was conducted as a regression design, consisting of 4 groups with three animals in each group. Adult male mink of the colour type Brown/Glow were used. The diet 1 to 4 contained increasing quantities of hydrolysed feather protein (table 1). Crude protein from hydrolysed feather protein made up from 0 % to 55.5 % of the total dietary crude protein. Crude fat from hydrolysed feather protein made up from 0% to 10.6 % of the total dietary crude fat content. Table 1. Formula for diet 1 and 4 (% before addition of water) Feed ingredients Diet 1 Diet 4 Hydro. Diet allowance was 300 kcal metabolizable energy (ME) per day the first 6 days, and 250 kcal ME the last 5 days. The trial was conducted in the period from 27 February to 9 March 2012. The test ingredient, the diets and faeces were analysed by Danish Fur Animals Feed a.m.b.a., the Analysis Laboratory. Results Chemical composition The chemical composition of the hydrolysed feather protein is presented in table 2. The content of dry matter 95.5 %, crude protein 89.4 %, crude fat 8.8 % and crude ash 2.1 % are in range with the product specification (96.2 %, 89.8 %, 7.2 % and 2.2 %). 1 Feather protein for mink. Digestibility In the tested hydrolysed feather protein standard, the apparent digestibility of crude protein was 55 % (table 2), while the true digestibility was 59 %. In vitro digestibility of crude protein was 91 %. The digestibility of crude fat was 82 %. Digestibility of amino acids for hydrolysed feather protein is presented in table 2. The relatively high SEM value on tryptophan digestibility should be compared to the relatively low content in the test product. ********* 13/09/2012 Louise Tinggaard 2 Feather protein for mink.
