C. Research Support
Funded Projects Ongoing or Completed in the Last 3 Years

National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, “Population Rhythms and Wave Propagation in Networks of
Coupled Neurons,” 1998-2001. In this work I used mathematical and numerical analysis to study the conditions for
synchronization, for development of localized activity, and for propagation of activity in networks of synaptically coupled
bursting neurons.

University of Pittsburgh Faculty of Arts and Sciences Faculty Research Grant, “An Analytical Study of Activity Patterns in
Heterogeneous Networks of Neurons,” summer 2001. This grant supported analysis of how the heterogeneity among
respiratory pacemaker cells can enhance the dynamic range over which a network of these cells generates synchronized bursts
of activity.

University of Pittsburgh Central Research Development Fund Small Grants Award, “Mathematical Modeling of Sustained,
Localized Activity in the Thalamus,” 2001-2003. My goal is to explain mechanisms that may underlie the experimental
observation of sustained, localized activity in thalamic networks lacking recurrent excitation, previously thought to be an
essential ingredient for such activity localization.

National Science Foundation, Division of Mathematical Sciences Award DMS0108857, “Oscillations and Waves in
Conductance-Based Neuronal Network Models,” 2001-2004. This award supports the study of how heterogeneity affects
synchronization and other firing patterns of bursting respiratory pacemaker cells; how localized activity can develop in a
neuronal network in the absence of localized recurrent excitation; and how the propagation of electrical activity along a
neuron may be affected by spatial structure.
