Grade 8 Math Course Outline 2015-2016 Mr. Derek Masterman, Mme. Chantal St-Jean, Mrs. Kim Albers, Mme. Lee Kennedy & Mrs. Karen Lloyd Name: ________________________ 8___ Course Description: The main goals and objectives of math are to prepare the student to use math to solve problems, communicate and reason mathematically, appreciate and value math, commit to lifelong learning, and become mathematically literate. The four strands in this course are: Numbers, Patterns and Relations, Shape and Space, and Statistics and Probability. The course aims to engage the student in tasks and projects, encourage a positive attitude, allow for discussions, promote curiosity and enjoy the learning experience. Mathematical Processes: There are critical components that students must encounter in a mathematics program in order to achieve the goals of mathematics education and to encourage lifelong learning in mathematics. Students are expected to: communicate mathematically (communication) connect mathematical ideas to other concepts in mathematics to everyday experiences and to other disciplines (connections) use estimation and mental mathematics where appropriate (estimation) relate and apply new mathematical knowledge through problem solving (problem solving) reason and justify their thinking (reasoning) select and use appropriate technologies as tools to solve problems (technology) use visualization to assist in processing information, making connections and solving problems (visualization) Content: The content of the grade eight math program is divided into four strands that includes problem solving throughout each of the four strands: 1. Number Develop number sense. 2. Patterns and Relations Use patterns to describe the world and to solve problems Represent algebraic expressions in multiple ways 3. Shape and Space Use direct and indirect measurement to solve problems Describe the characteristics of 3-D objects and 2-D shapes, and analyze the relationships among them Describe and analyze position and motion of objects and shapes 4. Statistics and Probability Collect, display and analyze data to solve problems Use experimental or theoretical probabilities to represent and solve problems involving uncertainty Evaluation: Your mark from grade 8 is composed of course work. Year marks are calculated from assigned work, test assessments and projects throughout the instructional year. Expectations: 1. Students are expected to come to class prepared to work. This includes bring all required materials (pencils, erasers, calculator, binder/notebook, textbook, etc.) and being mentally ready to participate in math class. 2. Students are expected to complete all assigned work either in class or at home if a student was not able to complete the assigned work. 3. Students are expected to ask questions when they encounter difficulties. 4. Students are expected to make a written attempt at all homework questions. 5. Students are expected to follow the rules of the classroom teacher so as not to become distracted or distract others from their learning. 6. Students are expected to show respect towards their classmates and classroom learning environment. If these expectations are not met then students may be required to remain in at lunch. Supplies: binder and dividers, duo-tang or work book (for math and science) calculator (square root and percent button) graph paper pencils, pencil sharpener, and eraser (all work must be done in pencil) blue or black ink pens geometry set ruler Grade 8 Math Timeline Time September October November - December January-February February – March April May – June June Unit Unit 1: Fraction Operations Unit 2: Understanding Percent Unit 3: Integers Linear Relations and Solving Equations Unit 4: Surface Area and Volume Unit 5: Pythagorean Relationship Unit 6: Ratios, Rates and Proportional Reasoning Unit 7: Representing Data Unit 8: Probability Don’t forget to sign up for Remind 101!
