Progressive Mathematics Initiative www.njctl.org Mathematics Curriculum Unit Plan #2 Title: Number System Grade Level: 7th Grade Length of Time: 4 weeks Unit Summary: This unit will allow students to further their understanding of the number system. They will explore rational numbers and perform numerous operations using them. They will add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers when solving equations. They will also extend their knowledge of rational numbers to decimals and real world applications. Learning Targets Domain: The Number System Cluster: Apply and extend previous understandings of operations with fractions to add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers Standard #s: Standards: Apply and extend previous understandings of addition and subtraction to add and subtract rational numbers; represent addition and subtraction on a horizontal or vertical 7.NS.1 number line diagram. Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division and of fractions 7.NS.2 to multiply and divide rational numbers. Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving the four operations with rational numbers. Computations with rational numbers extend the rules for manipulating fractions 7.NS.3 to complex fractions. Unit Essential Question: Unit Enduring Understandings: How do operations affect rational numbers? How can we use rational numbers to solve real Previous understanding of operations of numbers can be directly applied to rational numbers. Rational numbers can be used to solve real word problems. world application problems? Unit Objectives: Students will be applying their prior knowledge of the number system to problems involving rational numbers. Students will be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide rational numbers. Students will transform rational numbers into decimals. Students will solve real world problems using rational numbers. Evidence of Learning Formative Assessments: SMART Response questions used throughout the unit. 7 Quizzes Summative Assessment: Unit Test Lesson Plans Lessons Lesson #1: Number System, Opposites & Absolute Value/ Quiz #1 Lesson #2: Comparing and Ordering Rational Numbers/ Quiz #2 Lesson #3: Adding Rational Numbers/ Quiz #3 Lesson #4: Turning Subtraction Into Addition/ Quiz #4 Lesson #5: Adding and Subtracting Rational Numbers Review/ Quiz #5 Lesson #6: Multiplying Rational Numbers Timeframe Lesson #7: Dividing Rational Numbers/ Quiz #6 2 days Lesson #8: Operations with Rational Numbers Lesson #9: Converting Rational Numbers to Decimals/ Quiz #7 Review and Unit Test 1 day Curriculum Resources: https://njctl.org/courses/math/7th-grade/ 3 days 2 days 3 days 2 days 2 days 1 day 2 days 2 days
