THE SUREPRO DIFFERENCE
SurePro is produced by a unique, patented process
combining high-protein soybean meal with an all-natural,
highly reactive sugar and then heating to 205 degrees
Fahrenheit for 40 minutes. State-of-the-art manufacturing,
along with the addition of highly reactive sugar under
controlled conditions, promotes the Maillard reaction.
This reaction, commonly known as toasting, creates
a bond that rumen microbes cannot easily break. This is
the mechanism that allows SurePro to escape rumen
degradation.
This same process, while promoting bypass from the
rumen, provides for digestibility in the abomasum and
small intestine, enabling SurePro to provide bypass protein
and amino acids that are readily digestible and available to
the cow.
Competitive products typically rely on heat alone and
simply can’t match SurePro as a source of digestible
bypass protein.
The Maillard reaction creates a bond between sugars
and protein. This bond is a physical blockage to the
microbial enzymes, preventing them from binding
to the protein chain, and thus from acting in their accepted fashion. Since all protease enzymes require specific
binding sites in order to act, this stearic hindrance
(blocking effect) decreases the amount of digestion that
can be accomplished during the time the protein is in the
rumen (Figure 1).
It is easy to achieve very high levels of rumen protection by
overcooking material, but this results in a decrease in
digestibility and a lower protein value for the animal. The
manufacturers of bypass proteins have long recognized this
problem, and consequently, are forced to limit the amount
of time and temperature involved in the production
process. This limits the amount of protein and amino acid
protection possible with heat only.
The SurePro process takes advantage of the addition of
reactive sugars to allow greater protection of protein and
amino acids while using less heat, thus avoiding loss of
digestibility. The mechanism by which protected proteins
are digested in the abomasums and the small intestine is
the same mechanism that is used for unprotected protein.
Since low heating and retention times are used in the manufacturing of SurePro, this allows for excellent digestibility,
especially compared to competitive products that heat for
much higher temperatures and longer periods.
The binding sites for abomasal and pancreatic enzymes are
blocked in the same way as those for bacterial proteases.
The factor that allows binding is the low pH in the abomasums, since this causes limited denaturing of the protected
protein (Figure 2).
Denaturing is basically the ‘unraveling’ of the tertiary (three
dimensional) structure of the protein, which results in the
stearic hindrance being removed, and the binding sites
once again being available to the enzymes (Figure 3).

The high level of undegradable, yet digestible protein
makes SurePro a very economical and effective source of
the bypass amino acids needed for top milk production.
• Ruminally undegradable protein (RUP) —
bypass protein — is essential because rumen
microbial protein can’t supply all of the amino
acids needed to maximize milk production.
CONSISTENCY OF SUREPRO
UNIVERSITY COMPARISONS
The bypass protein used in dairy rations needs to be
consistent in order to maximize milk production and
cow performance. SurePro is simply unmatched for
product consistency and quality. The chart below
details the bypass quality of SurePro. The table below

samples collected and analyzed over a selected six
month period.

SurePro delivered the highest percentage dietary protein
to the duodenum (NANMN) without having any negative impact on microbial synthesis. The net result was a
higher level of essential amino acids delivered to the
duodenum, particularly lysine, but also methionine.
A two-year research project was undertaken by the
University of Nebraska to determine the bypass protein, true nitrogen digestibility and metabolized protein level of SurePro, Product A and Product B all
compared against soybean meal.
