Review Sheet for First Midterm Examination, Micro 20, Fall 2010, Dr. Sanchez
Understand the three clinical correlates that were assigned (Only the handouts), especially the
causes, bacterial names, transmission and symptoms
Know the 9 different types of microorganisms we discussed and be able to describe them
including their makeup and classifications as eukaryotes, prokaryotes and acellular as well as the
Domains they were in.
Understand the following theories: Spontaneous Generation, Germ Theory, Cell Theory,
Biogenesis.
Be able to describe the most important invention in the development of microbiology as well as
the two people responsible for its development. Know where the word “cell” comes from.
Know which microscope objectives are best for different microorganaisms
Understand how one could connect a potential microorganism cause of a disease to that disease?
Know the steps in that process and who developed them.
Know what a plasma membrane is made of and how it regulates what goes in and out of the cell?.
Know the two functions of the plasma membrane. Understand how the properties of water fall
within this structure.
Know the two main purposes of a bacterial cell wall. Understand the molecular structure of the
cell wall and how it contributes to the purposes of the cell wall.
Know the procedure to the Gram Stain.
Know different bacterial cell structures including glycocalyx (thin and thick) and pili (short and
long). Know what they are made of and what their functions are. Know the bacterial examples
we discussed in class for each structures.
Understand what a biofilm is and what substance connects the bacteria in it. Also know the
bacterial example we discussed.
Know the difference between the type of metabolism as well as how enzymes work.
Know how ATP carries energy and is used by a cell and how glucose/sugars store energy.
Know the purpose, intracellular location and outcomes of : Glycolysis, Fermentation (Lactic
Acid/Ethanol), Preparation for Respiration, Electron Transport Chain, and ATP Synthetase.
Understand the differences between anaerobic and aerobic metabolism. As well the purpose of
Oxygen in aerobic metabolism.
