Description
design, perform, compile data, and evaluate experiments on plant materials, using
instruments effectively, controlling major variables, and selecting appropriate processes
describe in detail mitosis and meiosis
evaluate the physiological and ethical consequences of medical treatments such as
radiation therapy and chemotherapy
TASK 1. Stages of Mitosis – Cellular Observations
Go to this web site:
http://www.biology.arizona.edu/cell_bio/activities/cell_cycle/cell_cycle.html
1. Read through the information presented on the screen and then click the NEXT
button.
2. Read through the information on the 2nd screen and then click NEXT when done.
3. As instructed, fill in the data table that is presented. Click NEXT when you have
done so.
4. You will then be shown several (36) cells and you have to identify what stage of
mitosis the cell is in. The computer will tell you if you are correct or not. At the end
copy the tallies into your data table above.
(3pts)
5. Lastly, calculate the percent of cells that are in each phase. To calculate the % of
cells in interphase, for example, use the following formula: (3pts)
# in interphase x 100 = ___________ % in interphase
total # (36)
Mitosis Questions: Answer in the space provided.
a) In what stage of mitosis do most cells appear to be? In what stage of mitosis
would you predict that cells spend the most time? Explain. (3pts)
b) Interphase is sometimes called a “resting phase”. Is the cell really resting in this
phase? Explain. (2pts)
c) Why are onion root tips a common tissue to look at under the microscope to see
cells in the different phases of mitosis? (2pts)
d) What are the similarities and differences between plant and animal cell mitosis?
(3pts)
Meiosis Question: Complete questions in the spaces provided.
e) How many single chromosomes do humans have in their body cells? _______ (1pt)
f) How many chromosomes pairs do humans have in their body cells? _______ (1pt)
g) How many single chromosomes do humans have in their sex cells? _______ (1pt)
h) How many chromosomes pairs do humans have in their sex cells? _______ (1pt)
i)
What is the diploid number for humans? _______ (1pt)
j) What is the haploid number for humans? _______ (1pt)
k) Why is meiosis necessary for sexual reproduction? (2 pts)
l) What is the main difference between meiosis I and meiosis II? (1 pt)
m) Using colored pencils, show how the haploid number of 2 chromosomes restores
the diploid number at fertilization. (2 pts)
n) Create a Venn diagram to show similarities and differences between mitosis and
meiosis. (8pts)
TASK 2. Effects of Radiation
Go to the Canadian Cancer Society website www.cancer.ca Click on the tab “About
Cancer”. Navigate this page to find the following information.
1. In *your own words* , what is cancer and how does it harm the body? (3pts)
2. From this page, navigate to the treatment section. Find the following information
on one of the following cancer treatments: chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
(8pts)
*Tip : Use the ‘Related Information’ menu on the left side of the page to help
guide you to the appropriate information.
a. Describe how the treatment works against cancer cells.
b. Advantages and disadvantages of treatment.
c. Side effects of treatment.
3. If a young woman without children has to undergo radiation therapy, what options
do you think she should discuss with her doctor before the procedure? (4pts)
