Cellular Respiration Quiz - Study Guide—ANSWER KEY
1. Write the formula for cellular respiration and what reactions the products come from.
C6H12O6 + 6O2  6CO2 + 6H2O __glucose comes from photosynthesis (autotrophs)
and eating (heterotrophs); oxygen comes from the atmosphere and is released as
a waste product of photosynthesis; carbon dioxide comes from animals exhaling;
water comes from the atmosphere/precipitation
2. What is the role of ATP?
ATP is the form of energy that your cells can utilize.
3. What products of photosynthesis are used as reactants in cellular respiration?
Glucose and oxygen
4. What happens during the process of glycolysis?
Glucose is partially broken down into 2 molecules of pyruvate. There is a net gain
of 2 ATP produced.
5. Name the two parts to cellular respiration and list their products.
Glycolysis = pyruvate, NADH, ATP
Aerobic Respiration = CO2, H2O, ATP
6. Name the two types of anaerobic respiration; give an example of an organism that uses
this process, and the products of the process.
Lactic acid fermentation; used by bacteria; produces lactic acid and NAD+
Alcoholic fermentation; used by yeast; produces CO2, ethanol, and NAD+
7. Why is the Krebs cycle also called the citric acid cycle?
Because the first product of the cycle is citric acid
8. List the products of the Krebs cycle.
CO2, ATP, NADH, FADH2
9. Briefly explain the electron transport chain reaction in the mitochondria and where it
takes place. What fuels the electron transport chain?
The ATP, NADH, and FADH2 from the Krebs Cycle are used to fuel the ETC. It
occurs in the inner mitochondrial membrane; high energy electrons are passed
from one electron acceptor to another; this generates a H+ gradient which is then
used to power the ATP synthase enzyme, which produces ATP
10. Explain the difference between oxidation and reduction.
Oxidation is a loss of electrons, reduction is a gain of electrons.
11. Label the following diagram and label where the Krebs cycle takes place and the
electron transport chain.
Inner mitochondrial membrane
Outer mitochondrial membrane

Mitochondrial matrix – location of Krebs Cycle
12. How are photosynthesis and cellular respiration linked together?
Photosynthesis is the process by which glucose is produced by autotrophs, and
cellular respiration is the process by which glucose is broken down to produce
ATP. The reactants of photosynthesis are the products of cellular respiration,
and vice versa.
13. Explain carbonation in sparkling wines and champagne.
The carbonation in these beverages is caused by the release of CO2 gas during the
process of alcoholic fermentation.
14. Summarize our results from the cellular respiration lab. How did exercise affect the rate
of respiration?
As the rate of respiration increased, so did the rate of CO2 production; exercise
will cause cellular respiration to occur at a faster rate.
15. What can you infer about a patient that has an increased amount of lactic acid in their
muscles?
Lactic acid will build up in muscle cells when there is an oxygen deficiency.
