Math Vocabulary Lessons 1-7 Number: ____________ Name: ______________________________ Counting Numbers: The numbers we use to count things Example: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 Sequence: A list of numbers arranged according to a certain rule Example: 2, 4, 6, 8… or 5, 10. 15, 20… Term: A number in a sequence Example: in the sequence 3, 6, 9, 10, 12… 12 is one of the terms Digit: Any of the symbols used to write numbers Example: in our counting system we use the digits 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 to create all other numbers. The number 3,456 has four digits. Whole numbers: The counting numbers and zero Example: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4… are whole numbers. 1 ½, 2 ½, 3 ½ are not whole numbers Even numbers: Numbers that can be divided by 2 without a remainder Example: any number ending in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8 are even numbers Odd numbers: Numbers that have a remainder of 1 when divided by 2 Example: any number ending in 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9 are odd numbers Place Value: The value of a digit based on its position within a number Example: in the number 2,346 the digit 3 stands for three hundred Expanded Form: A way of writing a number that shows the value of each digit Example: 3 hundreds, 5 tens, 4 ones Addend: Any of the numbers added in an addition problem Example: in the number sentence 3 + 4 = 7 the numbers 3 and 4 are the addends Sum: The result of addition (the answer to an addition problem) Example: in the number sentence 3 + 4 = 7 the number 7 is the sum Commutative property of addition: Changing the order of addends does not change their sum Example: 3 + 4 = 7, and 4 + 3 = 7 Identity property of addtion: The sum of any number and zero is equal to the initial number Example: 45 + 0 = 45 (45 keeps its identity) Algorithm: Any process for solving a mathematical problem Example: For 4 + 5 + 6 we might look for numbers that equal 10 to make it easier. Ordinal: Numbers (or words) that describe a position or order Example: first, second, third, fourth…
