Cells
Cells
• Have a membrane
(covering)
• Have all materials needed
for life
• ALL LIVING THINGS ARE
MADE OF CELLS
Who discovered cells?
• Hint: His first
name was
Robert
• Hint 2:
ROBERT
HOOKE!!
Who discovered single
celled organisms?
• Hint: He called them
“animalcules”
• Hint 2: He saw was the first
person to see bacteria
• Hint 3: His first name is
Anton
Leeuwenhoek!!

Cell Theory
1.All organisms are
made of one or more
cells.
2.The cell is the basic
unit of all living things.
Cell Theory continued…
3.All cells
come
from other
cells.
Cell Membrane
•Surrounds the cell
•Acts as a barrier
•Controls what
comes in and what
goes out of the cell
Cytoplasm
•
Fluid inside
the cell
•Kind of like a
jelly
• What are some organs in your
body?
• Heart, lungs, stomach,
intestines, brain
• They each have a special job
to do.
• Cells have something similar
inside them
Organelles
Structures that make
sure the cells live
•Each organelle has a
special job
•Some get rid of
waste, some store
material, etc.
Nucleus
Some cells have DNA
inside the nucleus.
Bacteria do not have a
nucleus.
The nucleus acts as the
“brain” of the cell.
DNA
• DNA is the
genetic
material
Deoxyribonucleic acid
DNA continued….
• It has info to make new
cells and new
organisms.
• In some cells the DNA
is inside the nucleus.
Types of Cells
Eukaryotes
Organisms whose cells have a
nucleus. People, dogs, cats,
plants
Prokaryotes
Do not have a nucleus; single
celled
Also called bacteria
Archaebacteria
Not as common as bacteria; single
celled
Live in places where other bacteria
can’t survive such as hot springs,
swamps, deep ocean vents.
• What are the differences
between a plant and
animal cell?
Plant Cells
Chloroplast
Green, oval shaped
Contains
chlorophyll, which
takes energy from
the sun and makes
food.
Cell wall
• Outer layer of
plant cell
• Strong and
sturdy
• Supports and
protects the
plant cell
