Psychological Disorders
The Most common
types of disorders
Anxiety Disorders
• A group of conditions
where the primary
symptoms are anxiety or
defenses against
anxiety.
– Individuals will suffer from
intense psychological
arousal.
– Tension
– Intense fears that something
awful will happen to them
What is Anxiety?
• A state of intense
apprehension,
uneasiness,
uncertainty, or fear.
• Everyone suffers from
anxiety, but when it
affects your daily life that
is when it becomes
a disorder.
Types of
Anxiety Disorders
• Phobias (Agoraphobia) - Strong irrational fear of
an object or situation
• Generalized Anxiety Disorder - Milder but
longer lasting feelings of worry, not focused on one
stimuli.
• Panic Disorder - Periodic episodes of extreme
panic without warning or cause.
• OCD - Persistent intrusion of thoughts
or images
and a compulsive need to perform certain behavioral
patterns.
• PTSD – A disorder in which victims of traumatic
events experience the original event in forms of
dreams and flashbacks.
Mood Disorders
(Affective Disorders)

A disorder that is
characterized by
extreme mood
swings that are
inconsistent with
environmental
events.
Mood Disorders
 Individuals
that suffer from these
types of disorders will often suffer
from episodes of Mania (extremely
elevated mood, energy, and unusual
thought patterns) and/or
Depression (an mild to extreme
downturn in mood)
Types of Mood Disorders

Major Depressive Disorder -
Feelings of sadness, hopelessness,
inadequacy, worthlessness, and guilt
that persist for at least two weeks.

Bipolar Disorder (Manic Depression) Alternating feelings of extreme
mania and depression over a period
of a few days, weeks, or years.

