Environmental Issues: The Effects of Climate Change By Noah Taylor Environmental Damage There has been an average increase in temperature of around 1°C. The average temperature is predicted to increase up to 4°C in the next century. Alpine glaciers have melted to 80% of their size 20 years ago. The number of mudslides and avalanches have increased as well. Some mudslides and avalanches have destroyed houses and villages Environmental Damage Cont. The amount of rainfall has also been affected greatly by climate change. There is more rain and snow in the winter than ever. However, the northern portion of Germany experiences drought more frequently. This has greatly affected agricultural production. Demographic Damage An increase in rain puts stress on sewage and water management systems controlled by local government. Warmer weather has increased the number of deadly viruses present in Germany. These illnesses include malaria, the dengue fever, and Lyme disease. Emission Related Issues Most of climate change in Germany comes from the emission on greenhouse gases. The German government believes that emissions should be cut by 40% by 2020. This can be cut by halting the use of coal in energy production. This would also reduce the environmental degradation of mining. Negative Effects More heat related illnesses arise from climate change. More flooding, heat waves, and possibly tornadoes are a result. Climate change increases the possibility of forest fires. Positive Effects There may be higher agricultural yields in Northern Germany. There will be fewer cold related illnesses. The tourism business in Germany will boom, especially around the coast.
