Space Shuttles During a countdown for a
shuttle launch, “T10 seconds” means
10 seconds after liftoff. What number
represents “T10 seconds”?
During a launch, each second can be
assigned an integer. The following
numbers are integers .

Negative integers are integers that are less than 0. Positive integers
are integers that are greater than 0. Zero is neither negative nor positive.

The integer 5 is read “negative 5.”
Integers are often used to represent real-world quantities. Words like
profit, increase, and above often indicate a positive integer. Words like
loss, decrease, and below indicate a negative integer.

Opposites Numbers increase as you move from left to right on a
number line. Two numbers are opposites if they are the same distance
from 0 on a number line, but are on opposite sides of 0.
