What Would Darwin Say?
Since Darwin's time, massive additional evidence has
accumulated supporting the concept of evolution. Students
will select from a “Project Menu” to communicate to (or as
if they are) Charles Darwin if he were alive today.

What Would Darwin Say?
Students will utilize two pieces of cited evidence from
primary texts (one must be from the Library of
Congress), interpretation, and their reasoning for
including this evidence which documents Darwin’s theory
of evolution by natural selection.
In addition, students will integrate two pieces of current
evidence arguing as to how this information confirms his
Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection by modern
technology such as biochemical analysis, fossil records,
electron microscopy, and so on.
Students will be provided with a rubric for scoring prior
to the onset of the project.

Scoring Outline for What Would Darwin Say? Project Rubric Using Primary Texts & Two Pieces of Current
Evidence?
a)
List and highlight the key terms relevant to Theory of Evolution and natural selection in project including: adaptation,
common ancestor, competition, domestication, evolution, fossil, natural selection, population, reproductive success, species,
trait, variation. (.5 points each - 6 points)
b)
Explain the relevant vocabulary for the Theory of Evolution and natural selection: adaptation, common ancestor,
competition, domestication, evolution, fossil, natural selection, population, reproductive success, species, trait, variation. (1.5
points each – 18 points)
c)
Compare and contrast the influences of Charles Darwin’s and Alfred Russel Wallace’s work, including their independent
discovery of the natural origin of species which led to the formulation of the theory of evolution by natural selection, which
are based on distinct sets of observations and facts (Using Two Primary Texts and Two Pieces of Current Evidence). (20
points)
d) Apply the concept that natural selection acts on variation among individuals within populations (Using Two Primary

Explain the application of differential survival for the reproductive success of individuals with different traits and

Students will be able to
• Utilize computer lab time (3/9, 3/14, 3/16, 3/17, 3/18) effectively which includes: arriving on time to
the computer lab, arriving with all required materials daily (research, flash drive, notes and other
project materials), remain on task during class, if working with an approved partner for this project –
both team members will submit their own required portions and work independently from one another
to complete required tasks, not engage in off task behaviors as to disrupt other students, and utilize
computer technology appropriately. (25 points)
• Utilize computer lab time (3/9, 3/14, 3/16, 3/17, 3/18) effectively to create and submit a typed
document of the 4 pieces of evidence to be included in their What would Darwin Say? Project from the
list of Project Menu Items all must be cited correctly – 2 must be primary texts and 2 must be current
sources – Due by the end of class 3/14 (25 points)
• Utilize computer lab time (3/9, 3/14, 3/16, 3/17, 3/18) to create a MLA Work Cited page utilizing
EasyBib that includes the minimum of two primary text sources and two current resources which
document Darwin’s Theory of Evolution based of Natural Selection that will be included in the What
Would Darwin Say? Project Due by the end of class 3/14 (25 points)
• Complete What Would Darwin Say? Project by the end of class 3/17 other than FINAL EDITS
• Submit What Would Darwin Say? Project and Submit Final Product by the end of class with all typed
requirements printed out and completed by the end of class on 3/18 (25 points)
