Public Outreach / Non-university Service
Because climate change research has immediate policy relevance, I have also been heavily involved at both the national
and international levels in several reports, panels and workshops operating at the interface of science, policy and
conservation. The most notable of these is the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which was
organized by the United Nations to synthesize the scientific consensus on global warming and its impacts.
I've been involved with international non-governmental organizations to discuss the conservation implications
of climate change, and prepare possible strategies for reduction of future negative impacts on global biodiversity and
preservation of rare and endangered species and ecosystems. I have been Chair of the IUCN (International Union for
the Conservation of Nature) Task Force on Climate Change and Conservation and on the Science Advisory Council for
the Nature Conservancy. I've also participated in efforts led by Conservation International, the Royal Society for the
Protection of Birds, World Wildlife Fund and the National Wildlife Federation.

At the undergraduate level I teach an advanced course in Conservation Biology and a PlanII course in Global
Warming, and have given multiple guest lectures in interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary courses across
campus (departments of Biology, Geography, Geology, Mechanical Engineering, Architecture, Journalism
and Education). I've participated in events and giving lectures for the Bridging Disciplines Program, the
Dean's Scholars Seminar, and the Women in Science program. I’ve been the Study Abroad Undergraduate
Course Evaluator for the University of Texas since 2006 (to present). As Chair of the School of Biological
Sciences Committee for the Biology Option, I helped to develop and implement a new, university-wide B.S.
in Environmental Sciences.
I've developed and taught two interdisciplinary graduate courses:
1) BIO 386 Global Environmental Change. Climate science, the biological and health impacts of climate
change, policy implications and alternative energies. Students are from across campus, from graduate
programs in: Law School, LBJ School of Public Affairs, Science Education, Geography, Geology and
Ecology, Evolution and Behavior.
2) BIO 385K.5 Research Design. Formal training in preparation of a research program, scientific writing,
and effective communication of science. Has included students from 5 graduate programs:
Anthropology, Science Education, Geography, Plant Biology and Ecology, Evolution and Behavior
Graduate Students supervised:

Continuing Education And Educational Outreach Presentations
Because the subject of climate change and its impacts is one which concerns both policy makers and the
general public, and one which most people know little about, I am frequently asked to lecture for
continuing education programs and non-profit organizations, as well as provide briefs and testimonies for
governmental bodies. The most notable of these was my participation in a 2-day Congressional Course
to teach senior congressional staff about global warming impacts. In these talks, I present the general
climate science behind the global warming issue as well as my own work on the global impacts of
climate change. Follows a list of my lectures and other contributions for the general public, professional
organizations, and policy makers. (Due to time constraints, I turn down more invitations than I accept,
declined not shown).
