The Tarquins
A wealthy Etruscan family
 Established a monarchy that ruled
Rome for over 100 years
 Rome grew wealthy and more powerful


◦ Possibly introduced alphabet and number
system to Romans
The last Etruscan king became
increasingly cruel to the Roman people.
 The Romans rebelled and overthrew
the Tarquin monarchy (509 BC).

Early Republic
Established a republic as their new
form of government
 Lasts for 500 years
 Elected leaders ruled the city for a
one year period



SPQR was chiseled in
public buildings, park
benches, and on coins to
reassure the people that
the monarchy was gone.
SPQR stood for ‘Senatus
Populus Que Romanus’
- the Senate and the
People of Rome
Social Classes

Society divided into 2 groups
◦ Patricians – nobles
 Only nobles could be elected officials
◦ Plebeians - common people
 Peasants, craftspeople, traders, laborers
 Majority of population
 Could NOT take part in government
494 BC – Plebeians form a council and
elect their own officials.
 Patricians became scared Rome would fall
apart unless the 2 groups could
cooperate.
 Patricians decide to make changes to
Rome’s Republic


Tripartite Government – 3 offices that
represent all groups of society, giving
everyone a voice in government
1. MAGISTRATES

2 most powerful were called CONSULS

Served 1 year term as both political and
military leader
Held power over all other officials and citizens
2. SENATE
◦ a council that advised the consuls
◦ Held office for life, all magistrates became
senators after one year term over
◦ Were only patricians at first, but eventually
plebeians could also serve in the Senate
3.TRIBUNES and ASSEMBLIES
 Tribunes -Represented the plebeians
and had power of veto
 Assemblies – elected magistrates
 Served one year terms
Checks and Balances

Prevented any one part of the
government from gaining too much
power

During times of emergency, Romans
could elect a dictator, who had
absolute power, to rule for a short
period of time

 Rome takes control of Sicily, Corsica,
Spain, and North Africa

◦ Punic means Phoenician in Latin
War breaks out 3 times
1. Carthage attacks Sicily – 264 BC

After 20 years, the Romans win the island
2. Carthage attacks Rome – 218BC
◦ Led by Hannibal, who hated the Romans
◦ Hannibal is one of the most brilliant military
generals from the ancient world
◦ Romans victorious
3. Rome attacks Carthage – 146 BC
◦ Romans destroyed Carthage, burning it to the
ground
◦ Killed most Phoenicians, sold survivors into
slavery
Greece
Romans conquered all of Greece by 120
BC
 They admired the Greeks, so they
adopted Greek ideas and culture including
religion, philosophy, art, literature, and
education

Problems in the Republic
As Roman territory grew, the
nobility got richer and the poor
became even poorer.
 Violence erupts between the two,
leading to rebellions and civil war.

