Marketing and Communications Manager
Reports to: Executive Producer & Co-CEO
Supervises: Marketing & Communications department comprising: Media Manager, Digital Marketing
Coordinator, Communications Coordinator, Graphic Designer, CRM & Ticketing Manager, Box Office
Manager, Box Office Supervisor and casual ticketing staff.
Lateral relationships: Works closely with Executive Producer, Artistic Director, Company Administrator,
Finance Manager, Production Manager, Development Manager and Producer

contemporary theatre. With a strong focus on the development of new work, Malthouse Theatre presents
reinvestigations of classic work, reappraisals of the Australian repertoire, and the best of new Australian

POSITION SUMMARY
The Marketing and Communications Manager provides high level leadership in the development,
management and operation of innovative marketing and communications strategies in line with Malthouse
Theatre’s artistic and financial goals. The position manages key staff responsible for communications,
marketing and ticketing.
As a senior manager within the company, the Marketing & Communications Manager contributes to the
development and realisation of all business planning and KPIs relating to audience development, access
and key income targets. This is a full-time position based at The Coopers Malthouse in Southbank.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES
Strategic Planning & Policy
Develop strategic Marketing and Communications plans for the company
Identify future needs, trends and resources for effective marketing of Malthouse Theatre
Work closely with the Executive, Media Manager and CRM & Ticketing Manager to develop and
deliver strategies and policies related to box office sales and profile raising
Oversee CRM system strategies, developing practices to meet business objectives, increase the
audience database and best utilise and protect data
Operational Management
Develop and oversee implementation of print, advertising, brand and audience engagement
campaigns on time, on budget, and in consultation with Executive
Manage all Malthouse Theatre print and online publications, including the production of the annual
season brochure, taking responsibility for maintaining the company’s high quality brand identity
Ensure the effective communication of all marketing and publicity entitlements for venue hirers and
co-presenting partners
Manage internal company communications via Media Manager
Deliver sponsorship and promotional benefits and activations as advised by Malthouse Theatre’s
fundraising and development staff
Ensure that all OH&S legislation, policies, procedures and work practices are implemented and
adhered to by staff and participate in risk assessment as required
Financial Management
Develop the annual budget for Marketing & Communications department in consultation with the
Executive
Manage the marketing and communications budget, including bespoke campaigns for all
productions and other company activities
Follow all financial processes within company time frames and other budget requirements
Staff Management & Development
Manage staff responsible for media relations, digital media, promotions and ticketing
Manage the recruitment, induction and ongoing training of staff, conduct regular staff performance
appraisals and provide regular, timely feedback
Ensure all supervised staff and volunteers are aware of their responsibilities and role requirements
Counsel and mentor staff to achieve excellent customer service, and support staff in dealing with
difficult and exceptional circumstances
Conduct weekly team meetings to facilitate staff input into operational and strategic matters and to
provide department information to the company
Motivate staff responsible for maintaining the look and feel of The Coopers Malthouse venue and all
other patron touch-points
Utilise effective methods to facilitate excellent two-way communication with all internal and
external stakeholders
Reporting
Produce detailed annual strategic marketing and communication plans
Maintain and circulate marketing effectiveness analysis
Provide regular commentary and analysis on ticket sales, financial and operational data
Provide operational and analytical reports as required, including bi-monthly Board reports
Contribute to annual stakeholder acquittals, statistical reporting, annual reports and business plans
SELECTION CRITERIA
1.
A minimum of 5 years experience in marketing and communications is essential. A strong
understanding of the performing arts or cultural sector is valued.
2.
Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing strategic marketing plans, including
audience development strategies, in the arts.
3.
Proven high level communication skills, in particular excellent attention to detail, organisational
and social skills.
4.
Demonstrated leadership and management experience with a high level of creative thinking and
analytical skills.
5.
Demonstrated ability to manage workloads and priorities and a high level of motivation, initiative
and commitment.
