Professional Theatre Company Debuts American Classic:
Edward Albee’s "Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"
Toledo, OH – The Glacity Theatre Collective presents Edward Albee’s "Who’s
Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" This play marks the opening of this local theatre
company dedicated to bringing professional theatre to Toledo audiences. Cornel
Gabara directs this classic American play, starring Sue Ott Rowlands as Martha,
Dave DeChristopher as George, Ben Pryor as Nick, and Irene Alby as Honey.
Gabara says, "This play is an analysis of how one’s life twists under the pressure
of external factors which oppose one’s true nature, and what it takes to break
through the fabric of lies and deceptions in order to restore one’s true identity."
The Glacity Theatre Collective is comprised of professional local theatre artists
including founding artistic director Sue Ott Rowlands. The company’s mission is
to provide an artistic home for professional theatre artists in the Northwest Ohio
region; to provide the Toledo community with high quality theatrical productions
that reflect contemporary social concerns; and to provoke discussion and foster
communication among diverse groups within our region.
Edward Albee’s play takes the audience on a harrowing journey through one
night of intense partying that changes the lives of all four characters. According
to Gabara, "The play juxtaposes three generations, or stages in life; Martha and
George, the older tenured faculty and Honey and Nick, the new hires. These two
couples are constantly referring to Martha’s father, a looming figure that is never
seen, but whose influence as president of the university is ominously present."
The play originally opened on Broadway on October 13, 1962 at the Billy Rose
Theatre. It won the 1963 Tony Award for Best Play and the New York Drama
Critics’ Circle award for Best Play in 1962-63. It was selected for the 1963
Pulitzer Prize for Drama, but the selection was revoked because of the play’s
then-controversial sexual themes and profanity. It was also made into an
Academy Award-winning movie starring Liz Taylor and Richard Burton.
"Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" will be performed Tuesday through Saturday
night, May 15-19, at 7:30 p.m., with a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday. The location
is 1811 Adams Street (formerly known as The Frame Shop). Tickets are
available at the door or by calling (419) 530-2254. Cash/checks only.
