The student offers a focused exploration of aspects chosen from Boal’s work of his so-called Newspaper
Theatre and, in particular, the aspect of Concretion of the Abstract. The personal, theoretical and cultural
contexts of the theorist are discussed and explained, drawing from a range of appropriate primary and
secondary sources. Based on a video news clip, the student explores the theory, employing a range of
carefully selected, appropriate and relevant practical techniques, explaining and justifying her particular
approach and choices in relation to her stated intentions. The student reflects on feedback and evaluates
the impact this has had on her work and the action she has taken. The student employs appropriate and
effective theatrical techniques to present the selected aspect(s) of theory in practice. The student
demonstrates a sustained and highly effective practical application of the selected aspect(s) of theory, which
clearly and appropriately fulfills her stated intentions. The student evaluates the presented solo theatre piece
and considers the extent to which her intentions were met with some clarity. The student describes
challenges faced and her own personal discoveries.
The video clip exceeded the prescribed time limit. Where submitted materials exceed the prescribed time or
word limits, examiners are instructed to base their assessment solely on the materials that appear within the
limits. In this case this is important because the final news video section, mentioned in the evaluation, was
not within the time limit.
