Psychology

Psychology - The systematic, scientific study of behaviors and mental
processes
It is an academic discipline and an applied
science which seeks to understand
individuals and groups by establishing
general principles and researching specific
cases.
Return to Main Menu
Cognitive Approach

Examines how we process, store, and use info, and how this info influences
what we attend to, perceive, learn, remember, believe, and feel
The modern study of cognition rests on the premise
that the brain can be understood as a complex
computing system.
Return to Main Menu
Behavioral Approach

Studies how organisms learn new behaviors or modify existing ones
depending on whether events in their environments reward or punish
these behaviors
Return to Main Menu
Evolutionary Approach

Studies how evolutionary ideas such as adaptation and
natural selection explain human behaviors and mental
processes
FUN FACT: Human
behavior is explained
through evolutionary
terms; therefore, the
roots of much of our
behavior can be traced
back to and still
observed in chimps!
All behavior has an adaptive or
evolutionary purpose.

Humanistic Approach
Maslow's
Hierarchy of
Needs

Emphasizes that each individual has great freedom
in directing his or her future, a large capacity for
achieving personal growth, a considerable amount
for intrinsic worth, and enormous potential for self
fulfillment

Developmental Psychology

Examines moral, social, emotional, and cognitive development throughout
a persons entire life
This field examines change across a broad
range of topics including: motor skills,
cognitive development, executive functions,
moral understanding, language acquisition,
social change, personality, emotional
development, self-concept and identity
formation.

Sociocultural Approach

the influence of social and cultural factors on psychological and
behavioral functioning
The social/cultural perspective in psychology suggests that
human behavior is influenced by social context,
environmental cues, social pressures and cultural influences.
We are all shaped by the context of our environment and
influenced by the perception of authority in our social order.
Social psychologists suggest that these forces are very
powerful and explain a great deal about the causes of
human behavior and thought processes.

Social Psychology

Social interactions, stereotypes, prejudices, attitude, conformity,
group behaviors, aggression, and attraction
-Social psychology is the scientific study of
how people's thoughts, feelings, and
behaviors are influenced by the actual,
imagined, or implied presence of others.
-Looks at group behavior, social
perception, leadership, nonverbal
behavior, conformity, aggression, and
prejudice. It is important to note that
social psychology is not just about
looking at social influences. Social
perception and social interaction are
also vital to understanding social
behavior.
