The biography is being circulated as received by the Secretariat, without formal editing. Curriculum Vitae – Rajendra Shende NATIONALITY: Indian KEY QUALIFICATIONS Rajendra Madhavrao Shende is currently serving as the Chairman of TERRE Policy Centre. Former Director at United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), he is a leading expert in sustainable technologies and policies. As head of the Paris-based OzonAction Programme of UNEP, he worked with the governments of 146 developing countries to develop their national management plans to eliminate the use of Ozone Depleting Substances. He was part of the task force set up by the Government of India to negotiate the Montreal protocol. Mr. Shende was part of the following technological and scientific assessment panels related to Ozone Layer Protection and Climate Change: He was Coordinating Lead Author (CLA) of Special report on 'Safeguarding the Ozone and the Global Climate System’ of IPCC (2007) that shared Nobel Peace Prize with Al Gore. He was reviewer of IPCC’s special report on 'Methodical and Technological issues inTechnology Transfer', (2000) He has also been reviewer and steering committee member for: o UNEP Synthesis report on ‘HFCs: Critical link between protecting Climate and Ozone’ (2013) and; o Nitrous oxides, ‘Drawing Down N2O to Protect Climate and the Ozone Layer’ (2014). He has also served as expert reviewer of UNEP/WMO’s Scientific Assessment Panel’s report i.e. ‘Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion-2014’. Starting from 1992 to 2011 ,led a team of 50 staff of 35 nationalities working out of UNEP’s 5 offices. He retired from UNEP on 31 July 2011. His awards include: (list is not exhaustive) Stratospheric Ozone Layer Protection Award from USEPA (for OzonAction programme led by Mr. Shende.) –The first ever programme in UN system to get USEPA award. Climate Protection award from USA Montreal Protocol award and Letter of Appreciation from Executive Director from UNEP. UK Industry award for Partnership with OzonAction on Ozone and climate friendly Solar Vaccine Cooler Harvard University, John F Kennedy School of Government Award for Partnership with OzonAction on ‘Refrigerants, Naturally!’ Several environment protection awards in India. Dr. Abdul Kalam, former President of India invited Mr. Shende to demonstrate the Ozone and Climate friendly solar vaccine cooler and the industry-NGO partnership that he convened on behalf of UNEP to develop it.
