Vocabulary: Gene pool: the combined genetic information of all the individuals of a population. relative frequency: the number of times that a gene occurs in a gene pool compared with the number of times other alleles occur. single-gene trait: trait controlled by a single gene. polygenic trait: trait controlled by two or more alleles. directional selection: form of natural selection in which the entire curve moves, when individuals at one end of the curve have a higher fitness that those at the middle or other end of the curve. stabilizing selection: when individuals at the center of the curve have a higher fitness that those at either other ends of the curve. disruptive selection: when individuals at the upper and lower end of the curve have a higher fitness that those at either ends of the curve. genetic drift: random change in allele frequencies that occurs in small populations. founder effect: change in allele frequencies as a result of migration of a small sub group population. Hardy-Weinberg principle: allele frequencies will remain constant unless one or more factors cause the frequencies to change. genetic equilibrium: when allele frequencies remain constant. Speciation: formation of a new species. reproductive isolation:when member of two species cannot interbreed. behavioral isolation : when members of two species can interbreed, but have different mating rituals or customs. geographic isolation: when members of two species cannot interbreed due to geographical barriers. temporal isolation : when members of two or more species reproduce at different times.
