RE: RECOOP Visegrad Scholarship – Dept. Medical Microbiology, Debrecen, Hungary
HPV epigenetic study
High-risk human papillomaviruses (HPV) are necessary cause of cervical cancer, a malignancy with
expectedly high incidence also in the next decades. The E6 and E7 papillomaviral oncoproteins
immortalize the host cell by stimulating the cell cycle, induce genomic instability and alterations in gene
expression profile of the host cell. The oncogenic effect of the E6 and E7 oncoproteins is necessary also
for maintaining the malignant phenotype. This proposal targets two aspects of the central oncogenic role
of HPV. One aspect is to identify molecular mechanisms that are responsible for the gene expression
alterations by HPV oncoproteins, which may be useful in the diagnosis or prognosis of HPV associated
malignant and premalignant diseases. Precise mapping of the interaction between viral oncoproteins and
promoters of host genes can explore new targets to block the uncontrolled cellular pathways of the
malignant cells. The other aspect of the proposal is that detection of epigenetic and transcriptional
regulatory mechanisms of the HPV genome can serve as biomarkers of viral oncogene expression. In the
individual patient care and diagnostic, a panel of these biomarkers can sensitively and specifically detect
the malignancy associated functional state of HPV genome.
Potential Applicants RECOOP Intra-Visegrad Scholarships:
Slovak Medical University, Bratislava, Slovakia
University Hospital in Hradec Kralove, Czech Republic
Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia
The Intra-Visegrad Scholarships scheme is suitable for scholars coming from one of the Visegrad
Group (V4) countries (the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland or Slovakia) who plan to study in any V4
country other than that of their citizenship (at any accredited public or private university or institute of the
respective national academies of sciences)
Successful applicants within this scheme will receive scholarships of €2,300/semester and the corresponding host universities/institutes receive €1,500/semester/scholar.
RECOOP Matching Fund €1,000/semester/scholar
Potential Applicants RECOOP In-Coming Scholarship
Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University, Lviv, Ukraine
In-Coming Scholarship - Scholarships for Eastern Partnership
Scholarships for EaP are an extension of the existing In-Coming scheme of the Visegrad Scholarship
Program financing individual mobility of EaP scholars (citizens of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia,
Moldova or Ukraine) to pursue study or research stays at accredited public or private colleges or universities in the V4 countries.
Successful applicants within this scheme will receive scholarships of €2,300/semester and the corresponding host universities/institutes receive €1,500/semester/scholar. Scholars who will have to
travel to the host institution more than 1,500 km are also eligible for one-time Travel Grant.
RECOOP Matching Fund €1,000/semester/scholar
