Learner’s name:
Tutor/Assessor
Description of Assignment:
Portfolio work
Complete the following tasks (see individual task sheets)
Task 1) (1.1) (500 words max)
A. Draw and label diagrams of an animal cell as seen under a light microscope, showing the visible
organelles.
B. Explain the structure and function of main cellular organelles.
C. Identify and explain the functions of the cell organelles on the electron micrograph provided.
(Attachment)
Task 2) (2.1 & 2.2) (500 words max)
A. Draw and label the fluid mosaic model of the plasma membrane, describing the functions of different
components.
B. Define the following mechanisms of transport across the plasma membrane, highlighting the similarities
and differences between them, and giving at least one example of substance, used or produced by the
cell that would be transported by that mechanism:
1. Simple diffusion
2. Facilitated diffusion
3. Active transport
4. Bulk transport
5. Osmosis
Task 3: (3.1) (500 words max)
A. Outline the processes of mitosis and meiosis, explaining the differences between them, and when each
occurs, including detailed annotated diagrams.
Task 4: (4.1 & 4.2) (500 words max)
A. Briefly explain the meaning of cell differentiation (cell specialisation), and relation between structure and
function of the cell.
B. Explain why cells are organised to form tissues. List major tissue types in the human body and assign a
function for each.

Unit title: Cells
This assignment addresses the following Assessment Criteria from the unit (or a copy of the unit may be attached, if
all AC are covered):
Level Two
Level Three
AC no
(only list L2 AC if the Rules of Combination allow a
learner to claim L2 credit for this unit)
1.1
1.1. Explain the structure and function of the main
cellular components.
2.1
2.1. Describe the structure and function of the cell
membrane.
2.2
2.2. Explain the differences between osmosis,
diffusion, active transport and bulk transport.
3.1
3.1. Explain the difference between meiosis and
mitosis and explain when each occurs.

4.1. Explain the need for cellular specialisation in
a multi-cellular organism.
4.2
4.2. Describe major tissue types and their
functions.
Level 3 units only:
Learners achieve a Pass if they meet all Level 3 Assessment Criteria for a unit. You will achieve a Merit or Distinction
by meeting the following Grade Descriptors. Your tutor will give you feedback for each grade descriptor.
