"The present argument is this: mental life and the world in which it is lived are inventions. They have been invented on the analogy of external behavior occurring under external contingencies. Thinking is behavior. The mistake is in allocating the behavior to the mind.“ -B. F. Skinner, About Behaviorism. 1974 by İdil Akgün Samet öz Stimulus Response • Behaviorism is a worldview that operates on a principle of “stimulusresponse.” • All behavior caused by external stimuli (operant conditioning). • All behavior can be explained without the need to consider internal mental states or consciousness. According to John B. Watson • Behavior is the result of precise stimuli • Subconscious motives/latent cognitive processes can’t derive basic human development concepts. Three Types of Behaviorism • Methodological behaviorism is a normative theory about the scientific conduct of psychology. • Psychological behaviorism is a research program within psychology. • Analytical or logical behaviorism is a theory within philosophy about the meaning or semantics of mental terms or concepts. How Does Behaviorism Apply to the Classroom? • Behavior Management – Positive Reinforcement – Negative Reinforcement – Consequences – Punishment Conclusion • Behaviorism is effective –if used appropriately • Behaviorism isn’t a measurement tool for assessing knowledge learned Sources • wwwpsych.stanford.edu/~bigopp/Behaviorism.ppt • http://www.learningtheories.com/behaviorism.html • www.mc.edu/campus/.../Behaviorism%20Pre sentation.ppt • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRjElTMXk XE • http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/behaviorism / • http://www.rci.rutgers.edu/~cfs/305_html/Be haviorism/Quotes_SR.html
