Do you want to learn more about climate change and have your work published? Then apply to see international diplomacy in action at the UNFCCC Conference of Parties in South Africa! Global Voices is looking for a University of Melbourne student to attend the 2011 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in South Africa. Join young people from around the region for two weeks where you will learn about the international affairs of climate change, interview key stakeholders on a topic you are passionate about on the issue, observe proceedings of a major diplomatic forum and write on the experience for different news outlets. The key details The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (or UNFCCC) aims to provide an intergovernmental platform to mitigate the effects of climate change. Membership is almost universal across the world with 194 countries listed as members of the UNFCCC. Member-states attend an annual ‘Conference of Parties’ (COP) to assess the level of progress in mitigating the effects of climate change and establishing legally binding obligations for countries to reduce their emissions. Global Voices’ delegation to the 2011 UNFCCC COP in Durban, South Africa will be run between the 24th November and the 10th December. You need to be: Aged between 18 and 25 at the beginning of the summit (24th November 2011); Hold, or be prepared to obtain, an Australian passport with at least six months validity (at least to the 30th June 2012); and Be available for a pre-departure briefing in Canberra between 22-23 August 2011 and be able to commit between 5-10 hours per week to prepare for the Summit in the lead up to departure. Global Voices & the University of Melbourne will cover almost all costs – airfares, accommodation, travel insurance, local transportation, registration fees, most meals, and provide a small stipend in some cases. Applications will close at midnight (Australian Eastern Standard Time) on Friday the 12th August 2011.
