Endocrine system and Hormones Con’t - Releasing hormones stimulate other glands to produce hormones o Allows glands to communicate with one another o Are used in temperature regulation TSH – Thyroid stimulating hormone - There are steroid hormones and non-steroid hormones o Steroid (lipid) hormones enter the cell o Non-steroid (protein) hormones do not enter the cell Lipid or Steroid Hormone Action Steroid hormones cross the cell membrane, and bind to their receptors in the cytoplasm. The hormonereceptor complex then travels into the nucleus and sets in motion protein synthesis. The new protein(s) then go forth and cause the specific cell changes. Protein Hormone Action Protein hormones cannot cross the cell membrane. Their receptors are found on the outside of the cell. Once the hormone binds with the receptor it sets into motion a cascade that results in the formation of cAMP, the secondary messenger, which then triggers cell responses and changes. - Hormonal imbalances can cause severe illness o Abnormal hormone levels affect homeostasis o Hormonal imbalances might be treated with surgery or medicine o Steroids, a pituitary tumor, or some prescription drugs can make the pituitary overactive and indirectly cause problems
