Rational Numbers NOTES.notebook March 23, 2016 RATIONAL NUMBERS ON A NUMBER LINE A rational number can be positive or negative, and it can be written in the form a/b where b does NOT equal 0. Rational numbers include: integers, fractions, mixed numbers, percents, terminating decimals and repeating decimals! EXAMPLES: 8%, 1/2, 0.35, -7, 1.6, 14 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Plot 3/5 and -2/5 on a number line. Step #1 - Determine how much each mark represents - look at the denominator to determine what value to use. Step #2 - Label the number line. Step #3 - Plot and label the points on the number line. Plot -0.6 & 0.3 on a number line. 1 Rational Numbers NOTES.notebook March 23, 2016 ORDERING & COMPARING RATIONAL NUMBERS When ordering or comparing rational numbers, there are a few steps you should go through to get your answer. Step #1 - _________________ the numbers on a number line. Step #2 - Compare the positions of the numbers (to the _______________ the numbers are _______________, and to the _________________ the numbers are _______________). Step #3 - If you are comparing the numbers, use the appropriate symbol (<, > or =) and write the solution OR Step #3 - If you are ordering the numbers, write them in order. The least number will be the furthest _____________________ on the number line, and the greatest will be furthest __________ *********************************************************** At midnight, the temperature at the ski resort was -9 5/8 deg. F. At sunrise, the temperature was -2.8 deg. F. Use symbols to compare the temperatures. __________________________ When was it warmer? at midnight OR at sunrise Order -1 3/4, 2.6 and -4.3 from least to greatest. _____ , _____ , _____ COMPARE THE RATIONAL NUMBERS (<, >, =). Draw TWO number lines on top of one another to compare the numbers. 1) - 5 3/4 _____ -5.3 2) -2.7 _____ -2 5/6 2 Rational Numbers NOTES.notebook March 23, 2016 3
