Aim: How do living things
accomplish anaerobic
respiration?
What do all living things do to
acquire energy?
To get
Breathing
The processes of taking in oxygen and
releasing carbon dioxide with the use of the
respiratory tract.
Cellular Respiration
The process by which organisms break down
organic molecules (glucose) to release
energy(ATP).
What is Anaerobic Respiration?
ENERGY
Organisms make ATP (energy) without oxygen
This process is also called fermentation
There two types of anaerobic respiration:
Alcoholic Fermentation
Glucose  2 CO2 + 2 Ethyl Alcohol
What is the name of the process that converts glucose
into pyruvic acid?
Glycolysis
What is the net gain in ATP for this process?
2 ATP
Besides alcohol what else is a
waste product of alcoholic
fermentation?
CO2
Yeast is a unicellular
organism capable of
carrying out alcoholic
fermentation
Bakers Yeast
The CO2 that is released
during fermentation
creates bubbles and
pockets that make bread
rise.
Can we do anaerobic cell
respiration?
Yes, when our
muscles run out of
oxygen they do
lactic acid
fermentation
Lactic Acid Fermentation
Glucose  2 Pyruvic Acid  2 Lactic Acid
What is the name of the process that converts glucose
into pyruvic acid?
Glycolysis
What is the net gain in ATP for this process?
2 ATP
What does the lactic acid cause to
happen to our muscles?
MUSCLE FATIGUE!!!
That equals PAIN!!!!!!!
Types of Anaerobic cell
respiration
• Lactic acid fermentation
• Alcohol fermentation
• Glucose
• Glucose
2 ATP + 2CO2 + Alcohol 2 ATP + Lactic acid
Why do bread and Swiss cheese
have so many holes?
Alcohol fermentation vs Lactic A. Fermentation

•
•
•
What is the organic compound used by both?
Glucose
What is their main product?
2 ATP
How are they different?
Alcohol fermentation produces alcohol and lactic acid
fermentation produces lactic acid
What organisms utilize alcohol fermentation?
Yeast and Bacteria
What organisms utilize lactic acid fermentation?
Bacteria & Animal muscle cells when they run out of
oxygen
