Describe Severe
Weather Event
40 Ft. swell/wave
hitting Manhattan
Realistic or Not?
Or qualify (ex. Possible
but not the way it is
done in the film)
Not Realistic as
portrayed in film.
Actual Cause/Explanation
with source of information
No wave can grow this large
without breaking, says NASA
oceanographer David Adamec.

Fast temperature
drop in less than
a week (New
York)
No it is not possible.
No. While the atmosphere
warms and cools on the scale of
hours (the morning is cooler
than mid-day, for example) a
change in ocean circulation
(Figure 1) that would trigger a
climate effect would take place
on the scale of decades at the
very fastest. The ocean, because
of its immense volume and the
slow rate at which it gains and
loses heat, cannot physically
change as quickly as depicted in
the movie. Ice sheets and
glaciers, also because of their
immense mass, cannot melt
away in a matter of weeks. It is
worth keeping in mind that an
"abrupt" climate change, which
may take place over a decade, is
abrupt from a geologic
perspective, in which many
phenomena take place on the
time scales of hundreds of
thousands to millions of years.

Huge Hurricane
over land
Not possible
No. Hurricanes, by definition,
gather strength from heat and
moisture from warm ocean
waters. They lose strength over
land, and when the air or water
temperature falls below tropical
levels. Hurricanes cannot form
in the Arctic. In addition, no
storm could grow large enough
to cover the entire northern
hemisphere. Storms and strong
winds form because of a
gradient in atmospheric
pressure. You can have a strong
gradient (and therefore a strong
wind) over only relatively small
distances. It cannot be stormy
everywhere at once.

Rise in the sea
level from global
warming
In addition, a chill of minus
150° F is colder than any
temperature so far observed in
nature. The lowest recorded
temperature on Earth was minus
128.6° F at Vostock, Antarctica
on July 21,1983.

The coldest recorded
temperature in North America
was minus 81.4° F at Snag in
the Yukon Territory, on
February 3, 1947.
Possible
http://www.whoi.edu/
page.do?pid=12455&ti
d=282&cid=9948
Yes. There are two
modes of sea level
rise: rapid and
gradual. A gradual
rise in sea level
has been occurring
for the last 5,000
2
years. Global
warming accelerates
this rise by
converting land ice
(glaciers) to water
and adding it to the
oceans. Global
warming also causes
water to expand in
volume as it warms.
This thermal
expansion of the
oceans results in
increasing sea
level. The effect of
thermal expansion on
sea level is thought
to be more
pronounced in midto high latitudes
than nearer the
tropics.
On average, sea
level is rising
today at more than
0.08 inches (2
millimeters) per
year and if the
Intergovernmental
Panel on Climate
Change is correct,
that rate may
approach 0.2 to 0.32
inches (5 to 8
millimeters) per
year by 2100—the
fastest sea level
rise in the last
7,000 years.

Possible
The United States.
Though Americans
make up just 4
percent of the
world's population,
we produce 25
percent of the
carbon dioxide
pollution from
fossil-fuel burning
-- by far the
largest share of any
country. In fact,
the United States
emits more carbon
dioxide than China,
India and Japan,
combined. Clearly
America ought to
take a leadership
role in solving the
problem. And as the
world's top
developer of new
technologies, we are
well positioned to
do so -- we already
have the know-how.

Global warming is
expected to increase
ocean temperatures
and to increase the
flow of freshwater
into the ocean
through
precipitation, runoff, and melting of
glaciers. Many
climate models have
projected that
4
increased surface
ocean temperatures
and reduced salinity
could slow or
completely “shut
down” the
thermohaline
circulation.

So many
tornados in
California
No possible
Both these
observations prove
either that "The Day
After Tomorrow" is
full of high-tech
distortion, or that
the movie's makers
live in a realityfree environment.
Here are the facts:
The number of
tornadoes is going
up because of
dramatic
improvements in
detection
technology. As the
first weather radar
network went online
in the 1960s and
'70s, tornados rose
in proportion with
the increase in the
number of stations.
They then leveled
out until the newergeneration Doppler
radars became
operational in 1988,
when the number of
5
The truth in the
definition of
global warming

twisters again rose
proportionally.
The filmmakers might
have looked up the
history of severe
tornadoes, ones that
rank from F3 through
F5 on the Fujita
scale, a metric
analogous to the
better-known SaffirSimpson hurricane
scale. There's
actually a slight
decline in these
killer storms. There
are "more" tornados
only because the new
radar technologies
are detecting weaker
storms that cause
little damage and
were previously
unseen.

The truth is that
global warming is
happening and that
it is already too
late to avoid some
of the effects. Even
under the most
optimistic
circumstances,
atmospheric
scientists expect
global climate
change to result in
increased flooding

Whatever the
ultimate cause, loop
migrations evolved
separately in each
species to satisfy
its particular
needs, and this
pattern occurs
throughout the world
among unrelated
species. The annual
flight of adult
American GoldenPlovers illustrates
the loop pattern
(Figure 24). In the
fall, the birds
fattened on the rich
crop of berries
along the coasts of
Labrador and Nova
Scotia depart south
over the Atlantic
Ocean to South
America. They stop
briefly on the coast
and then continue
overland to the
pampas of Argentina
where they remain
from September to
March. When these
7
golden-plovers leave
their winter
quarters they cross
northwestern South
America and the Gulf
of Mexico to reach
the North American
mainland on the
coasts of Texas and
Louisiana. Thence
they proceed slowly
up the Mississippi
Valley and, by the
early part of June,
are again on their
breeding grounds,
having performed a
round-trip journey
in the form of an
enormous ellipse
with the minor axis
about 2,000 miles
and the major axis
8,000 miles
stretching from the
Arctic to the South
Temperate Zone. The
older birds may be
accompanied by some
of the young, but
most of the immature
birds leave their
natal grounds later
in summer after the
adults and move
southward through
the interior of the
country, returning
in spring over
essentially the same
course. The oceanic
route is therefore
used chiefly by
8
adult birds. A
return by the
oceanic route in the
spring could be
fatal. The maritime
climate in the
Northeast results in
foggy conditions
along the coast and
the frozen soil
would offer scanty
food resources for
the weary travelers.
By traveling up the
middle of the
continent, a much
better food supply
is assured.

FACT OR FICTION
11
BY: KATJA GALLI
I believe that global warming is a fact and we are living it as
we speak, we have gone up in average temps 1 degree. And
humans can take a dramatic action in stopping global warming
(those who believe in it) for we are the ones who caused the
glaciers to melt and the whole world to slowly die. We have
slowly evolved in to a world that demands energy and oil.
 But we can stop it we just have to agree on what to
do.
Cars, planes and trains oh my! All of those oil lovers are what’s
driving us up the wall we cant stop using them. But we need to
because you better pick your world, your life or your new Hummer
I defiantly now witch one I am picking my life and I will do
anything to keep it, even if it means getting rid of my new
Hummer. Cars like hummers drink up a lot of oil and just one of
those big cars can do a lot of damage, And bring tons of money to
the power plants and mining companies. So walking or bike riding
is always a good option and driving to far distances is to. 
12
There are many ways to go green like installing solar panels
or wind turbines to get energy in a less harmful way but we
also waist energy by just using you electronics from home but
that can be changed. Engineers have created household object
that do not waist a lot of energy (like the one to the left)
there are also many more from http://www.ourearth.org/.
