Long, uneven coastline
Sea important part of Greek Life (ppl became sailors, traders, fisher)
Geography made it hard for the people to feel unified.
Mountains divided the Greek mainland, caused different small
communities
Rivers were short and did not aid trade/travel (Different than Egypt
& Mesopotamia)
Minoans
o Named after King of Crete, King Minos
o Main city, Knossos
o Trade food, soil was not good for growing crops
o Strong navies to aid/support trade
o Volcano erupted nearby, tidal wave destroyed Crete.
Mycenaeans
o Society on the mainland, Southern Greece
o Conquered weak Minoans 1400BC
o Groups and clans of warriors
o Built fort-like cities
800-700BC Greeks formed Polis: City-States, usually around a fort
o Independent communities
City-states were similar and different.

 Covered small land (Athens and Sparta)

 Only free adult males had citizenship rights
 Fort built on an acropolis (hill)
 Agora (marketplace), meeting place
 Sense of identity, people loyal to their city
