DNA Modeling Name_____________________________Date_____________Hr_____ Materials: nucleotide models and spare parts Once you have your nucleotide models put together in the correct way, complete the following: 1. Construct a DNA model using the following nucleotide sequence to form a column from top to bottom: Cytosine Thymine Guanine Adenine 2. Let this arrangement represent the left half of your DNA molecule. 3. Complete the right side of the DNA ladder by adding complementary bases. If they don’t fit, figure out a way to make them fit. 4. Show DNA Replication: a. separate the left and right sides leaving a space of about 6-8 inches between. b. use the remaining nucleotides to complete the molecule using the left side as the base to match with. c. build a second DNA model by adding new nucleotides to the right half of the original piece of the molecule. d. tape the nucleotides together to form 2 complete DNA molecules Results: 1. Of the four bases, which other base does adenine most closely resemble? ________________________ 2. Draw a picture of each of the matching bases that paired together during this lab. 3. List the four different nucleotides. ____________________________________________________________ 4. Which two molecules of a nucleotide form the sides of a DNA ladder? ________________________________ 5. If 30% of a DNA molecule is adenine, what percent is made of cytosine? ______________________________ 6. If a sequence of DNA was made up of the following nitrogen bases, what bases would match up to them? A - A - T - G - C - G - A - G - G - G - C - A -T - G - C - T - A - G _____________________________________________________________________ 7. Who is responsible for first finding out about nitrogen base pairs? ____________________________________ 8. Who is most noted for the discovery of the double helix structure of DNA? ______________________________ 9. Draw a diagram of DNA with at least eight different combinations of nucleotides. Use a ladder structure.
