COUNTRY AND PLACE OF ASSIGNMENT: Arusha, Tanzania
CONTRACT DURATION: According to your program’s requirements
DESCRIPTION:
Uniterra is a leading Canadian international volunteer cooperation and development
program, jointly implemented by the Centre for International Studies and Cooperation
(CECI) and World University Service of Canada (WUSC).
Uniterra contributes to improving the socio-economic conditions of poor and marginalized
communities in 14 countries and with over 170 partners in Africa, Asia and the Americas
through the exchange of expertise and knowledge of Canadian and international
volunteers. Uniterra believes that economic growth, when inclusive, is the most powerful
driver of poverty reduction. The purpose of the Uniterra program is to improve the lives of
some of the world’s most vulnerable populations by stimulating growth and facilitating
access to the benefits of growing and diversified markets. To make this happen, we are
working with our local partners to enhance the income of poor and marginalized women
and youth through better access to employment and income generation opportunities.
Uniterra country program staff work with our local partners to design Uniterra assignments
in the context of the country strategy, supporting the inclusion of women and youth in key
economic subsectors. For more information on the Uniterra program, our approach and
countries of focus please visit: Uniterra.ca.
Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) is a government institution that oversees and coordinates the
tourism industry in Tanzania. Its general function is “to promote and develop all aspects of
the tourist industry in Tanzania.” TTB has implemented a number of short and long-term
tourism projects meant to diversify tourism products on offer and to enhance visitors'
experiences in Tanzania. One of the programs is an award winning ‘Cultural Tourism
Programme’ (CTP). Since its inception in 1995, CTP has achieved recognition as a tourism
product, complementing the mountain trekking, wildlife, and beach tourism products in
Tanzania. Currently there are over 60 Cultural Tourism Enterprises (CTEs) owned,
managed and operated by local communities. Through various marketing activities,
including the preparation and dissemination of brochures, the development of a website
(http://tanzaniaculturaltourism.go.tz/), and the organization of familiarization tours, the
number of tourists visiting the cultural tourism enterprises has grown from 35,000 in 2007 to
70,000 in 2013.
Visitors seem to enjoy their experiences with local communities in Tanzania, however,
there is slow growth. This slow growth is caused by a variety of issues including a lack of
knowledge on how to conduct effective e-marketing/digital marketing, inconsistency in
online product marketing and promotion, limited basic understanding of the use of social
media in international business marketing, and the lack of cultural tourism user-friendly
online marketing strategies and tools. Existing websites are outdated and do not get
frequent visitation, which is why TTB is looking for a volunteer intern Communication and
Marketing Assistant who will add value in these areas.
