A NTHROPOLOGY OF T OURISM : C ULTURE , P EOPLE , E NVIRONMENT ANT461H5S: Advanced Seminar in Sociocultural and Linguistic Anthropology Tourism is one of the fastest growing industries, often promoted as a means for economic development. Beyond economics, tourism is also a global process where people, images, and ideas circulate and become entangled. It is a space of encounter and negotiation by multiple participants, not only the ‘hosts’ and ‘guests.’ How do we make sense of these complex spaces of encounter and convergence? In this course, we will explore tourism as a ‘site’ for the examination of questions of concern for anthropologists, such as the construction of cultures and Otherness, ideologies of modernity and development, and identity politics. We will also consider theoretical approaches and debates in the anthropology of tourism. This is a seminarstyle course based on student lead discussion and debate. Building on themes and questions developed during the course, students will also have an opportunity to pursue their own research interests.
