Land and Climate
Tanzania has 3 main areas, highland plains (the Serengeti Plain), highland plateaus, and
lowland coastal plains.
By the ocean, it is hot and humid. The average temperature is 90 degrees.
There is a rainy season from March to May and October to December.
Elephants, rhinoceroses, lions, and hippopotamuses live in protected national parks and
reserves.
People
3 fourths of all Tanzanians live in rural areas.
The official language is Swahili.
Families often live together. The average amount of children in a family is 5. Families often
live near the father’s brothers.
Children as young as 5 are given serious responsibilities around the home.
Most houses are mud brick huts with grass thatch or tin roofs.
3 fourths of children in Tanzania start school. Only 10 percent make it past 7th grade.
Secondary school is expensive and many families need their children to help at home.
Soccer, track and field, and boxing are popular sports. Tanzania is known for its workd
class runners. Volleyball and netball is popular among girls.
Food
Rice, bananas, and ugali (porridge) are important foods. Tanzanians usually serve this with
a meat stew with green leafy vegetables. They also use many spices in their food.
