Jesus was the main teacher of Christianity. He taught the transformation
of the inner person. Jesus teachcing did a great deal to shape the value
system of Western civilization. In particular he preached the importance
of humility, hope and love. Jesus was seen by some as a revolutionary
wanting to overthrow the Roman authorities. He was crucified by the
Romans. His followers believe him to be the Messiah who will deliver
Israel from its foes and usher in an age of peace, prosperity and
monotheism.

During the Early Roman Empire, Romans paid little attention to Christians.
Roman usually tolerated the religions of conquered peoples but Christianity
came to be seen as a threat. Christians refused to worship state gods, an
action Romans considered treasonous. The Romans began persecuting
Christians during the reign of Nero. By the end of Marcus Aurelius’ reign
Christians were still a minority but a very powerful one.
