Was the Republic a good way to rule Rome?
• You’re about to see a diagram which
shows how the Roman Republic
worked. You will work in pairs.
• You will have 90 seconds to
memorise as much of the diagram as
you can!
• You will then have 3 minutes to
recreate the diagram as accurately as
you can.
• The process will be repeated twice.
• At the end of the challenge, the pair
with the most accurate diagram wins
a prize!

THE ROMAN REPUBLIC
Women and slaves not
counted as citizens!
The patricians: nobles
with lots of wealth and
land
Two consuls, who
governed the city.
Elected for 1 year
only; both had to
agree on any
decisions.
The citizens of Rome:
divided into 2 groups
They met in the assembly
and elected:
The magistrates, who were
appointed as judges and to
look after the city’s money.
The plebeians: ordinary
peasant farmers and
craftsmen
The tribunes, who
were appointed to
protect the ordinary
people from unfair
treatment.
The Senate: when magistrates retired they became members of the Senate. They
were experienced and gave advice to consuls. They became very important and
ended up running Rome.

Go back to your Republic diagram.
1)Take 2 colours; in one colour circle all the good/fair aspects of
the Republic, and in another circle all the bad/unfair aspects of
the Republic.
2)Write a list of the top 3 things you think should be changed
about the Republic.
3)Do you think Caesar changed these things?
