The Heart and
The Cardiac Cycle
Mrs. Hagemann’s Sixth Grade
December 8, 2008
Interesting Heart Facts
 It only takes about one second for the entire
Cardiac Cycle to occur.
 The Cardiac Cycle circulates 70 ml of blood
each cycle.
 Resting Heart Rate is about 70 BPM
 Beats over 100,000 times a day.
 In a lifetime, will beat over 2 & ½ Billion
times!!!
 Weighs about 10 ounces, or about the size of
a mango.
Heart Structure Vocabulary
 Aorta
 Pulmonary Artery
 Pulmonary Veins
 Vena Cava
 Heart Valves
 Left Atrium
 Right Atrium
 Left Ventricle
 Right Ventricle
Lets learn the
locations and
functions of
these structures
of the heart!
The Cardiac Cycle
Two Phases to The Cycle
 Systole
- Ventricles Contract
- “Lub” Sound
 Diastole
- Ventricles Relax
- “Dub” Sound
Lets listen to
normal heart
sounds!
Group Activity – Find Your Pulse
 Time to find our pulse!!
- You can find your pulse
by lightly pressing on
the skin anywhere
there's a large artery
running just beneath
your skin.
- Two good places to find
it are on the side of your
neck and the inside of
your wrist, just below
the thumb.
Group Activity – Heart Rate
 Time to find our heart
rate!!
- If you want to find out
what your heart rate is,
use a watch with a
second hand and count
how many beats you
feel in 1 minute.
- When you are resting,
you will probably feel
between 70 and 100
beats per minute.
Group Activity - Reflection
 Why are heart rates different for each
individual?
 Was it easier to find your own heart rate or
your partners heart rate?
 What new information did you learn about the
heart today?
 What did you find most interesting about the
cardiac cycle?
