Ministry of Emergency Situations of Armenia Armenian State Hydrometeorological and Monitoring Service (Armstatehydromet) Capabilities and challenges of climate services in Armenia Artur Gevorgyan, Hamlet Melkonyan, Yelena Khalatyan GFCS, Antalya, 17-22 November, 2014 Observational network of Armstatehydromet Meteorological, Hydrological, agrometeorological, climatological observations are performed The first observations in Armenia start from 1843, while regular observational network formed in 1930. There are 47 meteorological stations, 98 hydrological posts, 10 automat ground stations in Armenia The distribution of 47 meteorological stations and10 automat ground stations (green triangles) in Armenia Main areas of study and expertise on climate at Armstatehydromet Observations Climate monitoring, climate change and variability Application of global and regional climate models Development of climate change scenarios Provision of climate services and information to users from various sectors (agriculture, health, water, transport, etc.) Opportunities of using alternative energy in Armenia (solar energy, wind energy, hydro energy) Assessment of climate-related risks in Armenia Main climatic and environmental risks in Armenia There is a clear tendency of increase in occurrence of severe hydrometeorological events in Armenia (extreme precipitation and temperature events, severe winds, floods) Environmental issues Health threats Decrease and shortage of water resources Sevan Lake problem Drought and desertification issues, deforestation, soil salinization, Disappearance of Endemic species Food security Assessment of hydrometeorological vulnerabilty of Armenia Armenia is considered as a high vulnerable area Challenges and perspectives of climate services in Armenia Support and expand observational network in Armenia Collaboration with regional and global climate centres Expand and improve provision of climate services to climate-sensitive sectors Strengthen research in climatology using new methods and technologies Particular focus should be given to climate forecasting, climate change mitigation, climate risk and disaster risk reduction issues Publications Armstatehydromet in collaboration with UNDP published the following works for period 2010-2014: 1.CURRENT STATUS AND PERSPECTIVES FOR DEVELOPMENT OF CLIMATE SERVICES IN ARMENIA (available in English at http://www.nature-ic.am/) CLIMATE HANDBOOKS 2.SOIL AND AIR TEMPERATURE VOLUME 3.SOIL HUMIDITY, PRECIPITATION AND SNOW COVER VOLUME 4.PRESSURE AND WIND VOLUME 5.AGRO-CLIMATIC RESOURCES OF ARMENIA 6.SOLAR RADIATION IN ARMENIA 7.STANDARTS AND NORMS FOR BUILDING CLIMATOLOGY 8.SECOND NATIONAL COMMUNICATION ON CLIMATE CHANGE (available in English at http://www.nature-ic.am/) THANKS FOR YOUR ATTENTION !
