International Geographical Union Commission MEDITERRANEAN BASIN -COMB Turkish Geographical Society Ankara University Geography Department Istanbul University Geography Department 2016 ANNUAL IGU COMB CONFERENCE The Mediterranean sustainability between climate change and human mobilty. Antalya/Turkey 1st – 5th June, 2016 Venue: Ankara University Congress Center in Çolaklı, Manavgat, Antalya - Turkey http://sks.ankara.edu.tr/sosyal-tesisler/manavgat-orsem/ The Commission on the Mediterranean Basin will hold its annual meeting in Manavgat Antalya, Turkey June 1-5, 2016. What better location than Turkey to discuss the relationship between Climate change and impacts on Mediterranean area, with a special emphasis on vulnerable groups, human activities, adaptation and the future of governance. The Antalya Conference will be chaired by Barbaros Gönençgil (Istanbul University and Turkish Geographical Society) and Maria Paradiso (University of Sannio and Chairperson of the IGU Commission Mediterranean Basin) and co-sponsored by Turkish Geographical Society and Ankara University. Steering Committee: COMB (Annick Douguédroit, Maria Paradiso); TGS-Turkish Geographical Society (Barbaros Gönençgil, Ahmet Ertek); Ankara University Geography Dept. (Hakan Yiğitbaşıoğlu, İhsan Çiçek). International Geographical Union Commission MEDITERRANEAN BASIN -COMB Turkish Geographical Society Ankara University Geography Department İstanbul University Geography Department Call for Papers 2016 ANNUAL IGU COMB CONFERENCE The Mediterranean sustainability between climate change and human mobilty. Antalya/Turkey 1st – 5th June, 2016 Venue: Ankara University Congress Center in Çolaklı, Manavgat, Antalya Turkey http://sks.ankara.edu.tr/sosyal-tesisler/manavgat-orsem/ Conference Aim The evaluation of regional climate change projections for annual mean temperatures in the Mediterranean are likely to increases more than the global means. Beside of this, precipitations decreased especially during winter and spring seasons. However, increasing tendency during the last decades, extreme weather and climatic events, heat waves are affecting the Mediterranean region. All these changes, under the climate change concept, have brought about water stress, changing comfort temperatures, sea level changes, increasing evaporation and drought conditions, changing rain characteristics (seasonal and heavy rain possibilities), runoff problem and floods, and other physical aspects of the climatic conditions. Under these changing conditions, natural environment and human activities are at some serious risks. Biodiversity, natural disasters, urbanization and urban heat island, agriculture, tourism, health, education for awareness, mobility, woman and gender equality will be a main part of adaptation issues to the climate change processes in the Mediterranean region. Projections based on various emission scenarios and General Circulation Models (GCMs) show that annual runoff decreases in the Mediterranean. The complexity of climate change, impacts and adaptation needs to understand the physical, political and economic geography of these processes, and how they relate to other social problems, including persistent poverty, people’s vulnerability included women and children. There are several questions which we would like to address in our conference in this regard: What are the real threat and unfolding impacts of climate change on people (on different groups) and settlements on various nature, city/rural, formal/informal, economic/livelihood etc) in the Mediterranean area? Moreover, what are their consequences for living conditions notably for vulnerable places and people with regard to: resources, extreme flood, health, food sustainability, heat waves, agriculture, tourism, pollution, inner climate, minorities, welfare systems and well-being, human development and rights as well as duties, social and democratic national cohesion or ‘otherness’, solidarity, conflict, security and militarization, cooperation among countries or Mediterranean shores? What are the consequences for people in more or less advanced economies? How are climate change risks events and reactions experienced in different geographical contexts? How are they mediated by ethnic, class, gender, political and professional cultures? What examples and why do we have about successful change/adaptation stories? We would like to invite geographers interested in the Mediterranean area to address scientific challenges initially proposed in The IPCC Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) Climate Change (2013) evaluated assessment of future climate change for the Europe and Mediterranean and ISSC ‘Transformative Cornerstones’. If your research deals with climate change, its effects on integrated perspective natural environment and humanity in the Mediterranean region, we welcome your contribution to the conference. Main topics: Mediterranean climate current changes. Future climate changes projections in the Mediterranean area. Rural development and mountain communities. Urban planning in Mediterranean cities and issues of sustainability. Urban heat islands, access to natural resources: health, well-being and citizenship issues. Sea level changes and coastal effects. Impacts on Tourism activities. Climate change and impacts on minorities, marginal groups, women and vulnerable groups. Climate change and mobility: citizenships and integration governance issues. Climate change and international politics and relations. Adaptation policies and governance issues. Organisational issues. Transport: Antalya International Airport, transfer to the venue by shuttle. Airport-venue 67 km. All participants are required to arrange their flighs according to the shuttles timetable (arrival and departure): to be defined on Second circular.
