The role of plasma cells and memory cells in producing a
secondary response
When an individual comes into contact with a particular antigen for the very first time,
the initial production of antibodies is termed the PRIMARY RESPONSE.
The SECONDARY RESPONSE is the production of antibodies for a second infection
with the same antigen.

Primary and Secondary responses
1. Label the x-axis with time in 1 week periods.
2. Label the y-axis.
3. Draw an arrow pointing at the x axis to show the time of infection to this
antigen at 0 days
4. Label on the graph the latent period.
5. How long is the latent period for this infection?
6. Explain this delay in production of antibodies.
7. The person was infected with the same antigen at 4 weeks. Use an arrow to mark
on the graph the time of the second infection.
8. The person does not suffer any symptoms from the second infection. What
evidence does the graph give for the presence of the second infection.
9. Compare the immune response to the second infection compared with the first in
terms of latent period and antibody production.
10. Explain why there are differences in the primary and secondary responses.
11. At the same time as the second infection, the person was exposed to another,
unrecognised antigen. Draw another line on the graph to show the primary
response to this antigen.
12. What is meant by a person having ‘immunity’ to a disease?
