people, equipment, and procedures to gather, sort,

Assessing Information Needs
• A good marketing information system balances
information managers would like to have against
that which they really need & is feasible to obtain.
• Some managers ask for whatever data they can get
without thinking carefully about cost or usefulness.

• The costs of obtaining, processing, storing, and
delivering information can add up quickly.
• The company must estimate the value of having an
item of information against the costs of obtaining it.

• Many companies build extensive internal databases,
of consumer & market information obtained from
data sources within the company network.

than other sources, but presents some problems.

• Three basic research approaches are observations,
surveys, and experiments.
