CHEM 452: Biochemistry Instructor Office Office Phone Office Hours Email Classes Dr. Elliott Stollar S213 575-562-4973 Monday 4.00 – 5.00pm [email protected] MWF 09:00AM-09:50AM S214 Course Description This course starts by exploring the chemical basis of biochemistry and molecular biology. It then examines the molecular components of cells to include proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids. It examines the role of proteins as enzymes and the part they play in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. Finally it examines the processes of DNA metabolism, transcription, gene and protein expression. Course Prerequisites Chemistry 342. Required Text Book Biochemistry. (2010) by Garrett and Grisham. This book is available in the bookstore. Examinations and Grading: The final grade will be calculated using results from a student's work in the course. This includes final examinations, midterms, assignments and quizzes. You must pass one midterm and the final exam to pass the course. The weights (%) applied to each of these components will be: Midterm I Midterm II Assignment End of Chapter Quizzes Final 20% 20% 5% 15% 40%* * Approximately 20% pre-midterm I/II and 20% post-midterm I/II course material. Chapter Quizzes, Assignment, and Exams. Chapter quizzes (multiple choice) will be written on Blackboard after completion of the corresponding chapter material. These will be available online for seven days and may be written at any computer. Two attempts are allowed with the highest mark being recorded. The assignment will contain calculation questions and short answer questions on the material covered in the course so far. After the assignment has been posted on Blackboard, you will have seven days to upload your answers as a word file. Midterm I will cover all the material from the beginning of the course. Midterm II will cover all the material covered between Midterm I and Midterm II. The final exam will cover material from the whole course. Examples of typical examination questions (with some answers) will be available on Blackboard. Deadlines and dates policy Assignments and quizzes must be submitted by the deadlines stated. If you experience problems such as medical, bereavement, family crisis etc please obtain the appropriate documentation so exceptions can be made. This policy also applies to missing exam dates Honesty and plagiarism I will not tolerate ANY form of dishonesty during the course. Plagiarized work will result in a mark of 0.
