Lesson Plan:
I spend a lot of time on the body systems unit. I got pics off of the internet and traced them
onto regular paper and had the kids label and color specific organs specific colors. After we
finished talking about the systems I broke them up into groups of 3 ( I have a really small class)
and had each group draw a life size picture of a particular body system. The endocrine,
digestive, respiratory and circulatory systems turned out really well. You could even have more
than one group do the same body system. I used white butcher paper and one group member
had to lay on the paper while another traced them. Then they had to draw the body parts
where they belong and color and label them. It turned out really well and was quite funny! I
also had them individually choose a disease related to a specific body system and they had to
research it. They had to identify which body system it affected, how it is diagnosed, symptoms,
how it is treated, as well as find pictures to go along with it. Then they had to create a poster
and present the information to the class. Also, www.downloadlearning.com has a great
interactive presentation on the organs of the human body to introduce them to the unit, if you
have enough computers available. Other teachers in my department have also had the kids just
break up into groups and research each body systems and create a poster presentation to the
class (I did not have a big enough class to do this assignment). I will include the assignment that
I have created to go along with the above mentioned website, but you would have to find or
create a drawing of the human body with the basic organs pictured to go along with it.
