Digestion Vocabulary
Digestion: the process of breaking food sown into simpler substances for the body cells to use
Enzyme: a substance in a living thing that affects how fast chemical reactions take place
Saliva: watery liquid that moistens the mouth and food.
Salivary glands: gland under the tongue and near the ear that produce saliva
Bile: a greenish-yellow fluid produced by the liver to digest food
Villi: a tiny fingerlike projection the small intestine that absorbs digested food
Urea: a substance formed from waste material in the liver and excreted in urine
Excretion: the process of removing waste products from the body
Tissue: cells that work together to perform a specific function
Organ: different tissues that work together to perform a major bodily function
System: a group of organs that work together to perform a function
Peristalsis: the rhythmic contractions that move food through the digestive system
Amylase: the enzyme that breaks down starch
Organs in the digestive system: Mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, liver, gallbladder,
pancreas, large intestine
Digestive System: group of organs that breakdown or digest food into molecules the body can use
Large intestine: part of the digestive system in which solid wastes are formed and water is absorbed
into the blood.
Pancreas: gland that produces enzymes and insulin
Esophagus: tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach
Stomach: the muscular organ that stores and helps digest food.
Liver: Digestive organ that produced bile
Gall Bladder: organ under the liver that stores bile
Small intestine: part of the digestive system where most of digestion takes place
The Teeth: Incisors, canine, premolars, molars
Producer: an organism that makes it own food
Consumer: an organism that eats producers or other consumers
Decomposers: an organism that feeds on the wastes of living organisms and on dead decaying plants
and animals
Herbivores: plant-eating consumers
Carnivores: meat-eating consumers
Omnivores: consumers that eat both plant and animals
