Science Study Guide, Life Science Unit, Chapter 3
Please be sure to read and review the pages we read and did together in class:
Lessons 1 and 2, Digestive System pp. 112-116 and 120-129 WB pp. 44-45
Lesson 3 Respiratory System pp. 132-139
Lesson 4 Circulatory System, pp. 142 – 151 WB pp. 54-57
Lesson 5 Excretory System, pp. 154-161
1. Organization of cell structures within in the body from smallest to largest goes from cell
to tissue to organ to system.
2. The organ system that produces carbon dioxide as a waste product in animals is the
respiratory system.
3. The correct order of food traveling through the digestive system after it is swallowed is
esophagus to stomach to small intestine to large intestine.
4. The function of the digestive system is to provide the nutrients your cells need to
produce energy.
5. Food needs to be digested so that it is broken down for absorption into the body.
6. In the human digestive system, food is changed by movement and chemicals.
7. The esophagus moves food from the mouth to the stomach.
8. Two organs that assist the small intestine in breaking down food are the liver and the
pancreas.
9. The organ that produces digestive juices is the pancreas.
10. The salivary glands are located in the mouth.
11. The major organs in the respiratory system are the lungs.
12. In the lungs, carbon dioxide and oxygen diffuse through the alveoli.
13. Blood that moves from the lungs to the heart is oxygen rich blood.
14. The alveoli are air sacs in the lungs where gas exchange occurs.
15. The process by which particles of a substance move from an area where there are many
particles of the substance to an area where there are very few particles of the substance is
called diffusion..
16. The oxygen the human body needs is transported by the red blood cells.
17. The function of the circulatory system is to transport oxygen, nutrients, and wastes
through the body in the blood.
18. The stomach is not part of the circulatory system.
19. The left side of the heart is responsible for pumping blood through the arteries that
delivers oxygen to all tissues.
20. The main function of the kidney is to filter waste out of the blood.
21. Nephrons are located in the kidneys.
22. The kidneys remove waste from the blood and convert it to urine.
